Traci L Phillips

What forms of performance art are you involved in or passionate about?
Directing structured dramas and comedies in play format for the community to enjoy. I also love portraying various characters for the Cedar Hill Cemetery Stroll, as well as coaching youth performers for competitions.

What made you want to become a performing artist?
learned that playing a character than your own is very rewarding. I want to make opportunities for the community to do the same or enjoy watching others do so.

When did you start performing? Do you have any early memories to share?
I did all the church plays and school plays growing up. I had many dance recitals and piano recitals from the time I was very small. I only began to understand the actual art of theater at JSU.

Who or what inspires you?
The people who come through our doors do! Whether they attend an audition, which takes guts, or come see something that touches them, which they then share with me. The fact that every person there is donating their precious time to grow with us! I want to give them our very best.

Who is your favorite performer or performers?
Bernadette Peters is the absolute GOAT.

What's a fun fact about you?
I used to be cripplingly shy until I found theater in college. I had only done the things mentioned above, and was nervous even then. College theater brought me out of that. Now I teach public speaking! People who only knew me as a child can't believe it!

Add anything else you want us to include here
Although my failing memory keeps me from performing these days, except with a script like for the Cemetery Stroll, I am a director, and that takes a creative person too!
I also began learning acrylic paint pouring during the pandemic, then went through chemo and stopped (I didn't have the energy). I'm ready to start doing that again.
